Today i have spent the day at the Beginners Workshop learning Makaton for Parents and Carers.
What is Makaton?
“Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order.” (makaton.org)
Makaton should be used by all young children to help them communicate their wants and needs. I truly believe our children should be taught this from a very young age and it should be used nationally in education settings as well as home.
I already used a few basic signs with Caleb, such as ‘milk’, ‘food’ and ‘more’ to name a few. He definitely shows a level of understanding at his young age. He most certainly knows what comes after the ‘milk’ sign 😂😂
I can’t believe how much I’ve learnt in just 1 day! I can’t wait to use it in everyday life. I’m hoping my older 2 will pick up some of the signs too.
My hopes are for Caleb to have the best possible tools to communicate his needs with me easily as hose grows up.
I’d definitely recommend anyone with young children, or who works in early years education to get in touch and go along to the 2 day course.
